Probiotic Revolution

 The term “probiotic” originates from a Greek term meaning, “For Life.” They are friendly bacteria and are often associated with healthy digestion and they live naturally in foods like plain unflavored yogurt! 

Prebiotics are fiber that feeds the beneficial microorganisms residing in the intestine. Probiotics are live microorganisms that when ingested, can enhance intestinal microbial balance. Prebiotics have been used in pet foods for decades, probably without pet owners even knowing it.

"Research isn’t readily available to support every potential use of probiotics in animals, but veterinarians should remain open to benefits outside of a diarrhea remedy," says Susan Wynn, DVM, of Georgia Veterinary Specialists. "Clients will continue to demand probiotics and the industry will continue to find ways to use them."

You should consult with your local Doctor of Veterinary Medicine about the usage of probiotics in your pet.

There are many uses for probiotis in companion animals.  Dr. Ernie Ward states that probiotics may assist in:
  1. Aging
  2. When Anesthetic Agents are being used
  3. When Antibiotics are being administered
  4. In Illness
  5. In stress situations-extended travel or boarding
  6. When the diet is not or was not optimal
  7. When urinary tract infections are present
  8. Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients
  9. In Overweight dogs during weight management


When choosing a probiotic supplement, consult with your LDVM.

Nutrition will play a very important role in the care of pets today and tomorrow.  Diets will continue to be improved by the major players in prescription diets to prevent and decrease recurrence of disease.

Probiotics will play a role in this nutritional revolution.  Continue to speak to your local doctor of veterinary medicine.  Collect information based on knowledge and information by specialists in animal nutrition.

 The choice of probiotics available on the human market and veterinary market is mind boggling.  I recommend, to my clients, choosing a probiotic with a minimum of ten billion CFU's and at least ten active cultures.
